EXHIBITION GUIDE

The book is a guide to the exhibition mounted by the Folklife Museum (1985) on the urban Greek house in Thessaloniki. The exhibition filled a gap in our knowledge about the daily lives of the people in Thessaloniki, during the years before the liberation of the city (1912), given the dearth of information on the every day life of that period.

The exhibition guide includes original academic articles on the urban house of the period, the construction methods and architectural trends, the organization of each individual room and its furnishings, based on assiduous research carried out over two years. The texts are accompanied by old photographs (views of the city, houses, individuals taken at private moments), as well as modern photographs and drawings representing interiors and objects, newspaper referenses of the period - all material which contributes to a better understanding of the social life of Thessaloniki's urban residents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
