The Painter of General Makrygiannis. 1984

Ο Ζωγράφος του Στρατηγού Μακρυγιάννη. 1984

The exhibition featured 24 paintings (water colours) by Panayiotis Zografos, painter of General Makrygiannis, loaned to the Folklife Museum by the Gennadious Library of the American School of Classical Studies- an opportunity for the works to be seen by the people of Thessaloniki.

Following the War of Independence which broke out in 1821, Makryiannis commissioned (1836 - 1839) Panayiotis Zografos to paint scenes of the major battles in which he had taken part. In the margin of each painting, the General added his own notes with details and explanations regarding the course of the battle depicted.

Makrygiannis ordered four series of copies of these works to be given to prominent figures of the period. The 24 works in the Gennadious collection are one of these four series, probably the one which Makrygiannis gave to Othon and which were acquired by Ioannis Gennadios in Rome in 1909.

This exhibition was held in 1984 as part of the XIX Demetria Festival. It served one of the main objectives of the Museum: to bring the people of the city into contact with the most important works in our folklore and artistic traditions.

A series of lectures was organized to accompany the exhibition, on the subject of popular painting.

The exhibition catalogue is out of print.
