The Bourgeois Greek House, 1880-1912. 1985

Αστικό Ελληνικό Σπίτι Θεσσαλονίκης: 1880 – 1912. 1985

This exhibition represented the Museum's contribution to the celebrations marking the 2300 years since the founding of Thessaloniki.

The exhibition presented the main rooms to be found in the average bourgeois house of the Greek community in Thessaloniki, with all their contents, furniture, utensils, clothes, etc. There was also an important display of photographs and archive material illustrating the life in Thessaloniki before the liberation of the city (1912).

The exhibition was based on extensive research (involving study of literature, archives and on-site visits with eighty interviews of elderly residents of the city), necessary in order to fill the gaps in our knowledge of the everyday life of Thessaloniki's people in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The exhibition was staged on the second floor of the Museum and featured the following thematic units:

Drawing room, Parlour, Bedroom, Kitchen and Ancillary Areas (laundry room, bathroom and lavatory). There was also a display dedicated to the Cycle of Life (Birth/Childhood, Marriage/Relations between man and woman, Death).

An important contribution was made by many local people who loaned or donated furniture, clothes and various other items for the exhibition, as well as a wealth of photographic and archive material.

The exhibition was so popular, that it was kept open for three whole years - having originally been scheduled to last just six months.

The catalogue is unfortunately now out of print.
