Little-no-shirt, the wild swans and other folk tales with cloths, February-March 2006, storytelling of fairy tales

The programme was organized in two sequences, in the framework of the exhibition 'Macedonia-Thrace: Traditional Costumes, 1860-1960'.

1. for school teams containing activities taking place before and after the storytelling.

Purpose: acquainting the children with aspects and values of our traditional culture and making them more aware of their cultural heritage

1.1 For children aged 6-8
1.2 For children aged 9-12

Duration: 2 hours

Objectives: acquainting the children with the world of Greek folk fairy tales, where the garment has a special role and with the importance of the dress to the traditional society of our place.

A few words about the programme: In fairy tales not only do the garment cover the body but it becomes a distinctive mark of humans living in a society, a point of recognition, it acculturates the spirits, it transforms, it covers the entire visible universe.

After a brief conducted tour at the exhibition 'Macedonia-Thrace: Traditional Costumes, 1860-1960', the activities before the storytelling were taking place (presentation of the garment's couture procedure, in the past and today, competition of riddles related to cloth). These activities were preparing the children for the fairy tales. Due to the dramatization of fairy tales ('the wild swans' for younger children and 'The moshoplasmenos' for older ones), the children were fascinated with the magic world of Greek folk fairy tales related to garments. Finally, the activities taking place after the storytelling, such as games, painting, collage, dramatizing of fairy tale scenes, weaving in special looms, singing and dancing with percussion instruments, contributed to the comprehension, with entertaining ways, of the garment's function and its importance to the traditional society.

A rich material, which can be exploited in many ways, has been gathered from the programmes of the school teams.

Implementation: daily by the pedagogue-storyteller Ioanna Antoniadou.

Planning: Nelli Melidou-Kefala

2. for children and adults: Saturday and Sunday

Duration: 1 hour

Objective: The presentation of the garment functions, as they appear to our folk fairy tales of Macedonia and Thrace and of other Greek places as well, to young and older people, through the magic ambience of fairy tales.

A few words about the programme: In fairy tales not only do the garment cover the body but it becomes a distinctive mark of humans living in a society, a point of recognition, it acculturates the spirits, it transforms, it covers the entire visible universe.

Through the narration of same fairy tales by Agni Stroubouli at a mixed audience of children and adults (as it used to happen at the traditional society), young and older people had the opportunity to experience 'magic' moments and to comprehend the importance of the garment in fairy tales and in traditional society as well.

Implementation: Agni Stroubouli
