Family heirlooms from eastern Thrace and eastern Romylia. 1992

Family heirlooms from eastern Thrace and eastern Romylia, 1992

The exhibition was one of a programme of events organized, in association with the Panhellenic Federation of Thracian Societies, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1922 disaster and the uprooting of most of the Greek population from their ancient homelands (Asia Minor, eastern Thrace and Romylia, the Black Sea region).

The refugees from eastern Thrace and Romylia settled all over Greece but mainly in western Thrace and Macedonia. They put down new roots in urban centres, creating their own refugee communities, and also established their own villages, bearing the names of their lost homelands in Thrace.
The exhibition featured:

Religious treasures, documents, maps, books, seals, a variety of printed material, gems and jewellery of great value donated by refugee families to the Folklife Museum and which demonstrate the high level of education and social organization of the refugees.

The research for the exhibition and gathering of the material was the work of members of the Panhellenic Federation of Thracian Societies and the Museum staff.

A guide was issued to accompany the exhibition, and is available at the Museumshop.
