Recent Traditional Embroidery: 1930-1960. 1977

Four years after opening to the public (18-2-1973), the Museum organized its first temporary exhibition dedicated to the art of embroidery; the exhibition was staged in two areas on the second floor of the Museum.

Fourteen display areas were used to show embroidered designs on rugs which, although made relatively recently, draw their subjects from the traditional motifs which used to decorate -mainly - clothes from Macedonia, Thrace and various other parts of Greece.

This borrowing of traditional motifs from clothing for use in more recently made rugs was not a matter of blind imitation; the subjects were often ingeniously adapted to suit the new surface and fit the new use for which it was intended.

In its new manifestation, the traditional motif often creates a completely different impression from the one made when it was used to decorate traditional clothing; this is due to the new composition created by the embroiderer, skilfully adapting the old motifs to items of modern use and demonstrating great sensitivity in the choice of colours and fabrics.

A large number of the exhibits came from the Workshop of the Patriotic Foundation, while others were gifts from the National Greek Crafts Organization or from private individuals.

The highly successful exhibition was subsequently transferred to Katerini (Muses of Pieria Centre) and to Aridaia.
